Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Homeowner Education

Through a grant from US EPA and in partnership with theRural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP), theNational Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association(NOWRA) has developed this training program for educating property owners with an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS). This course is designed to help homeowners get the most out of their Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS).This interactive homeowner/public educational module is aimed at residential owners and the general public with best management practices to help keep their septic systems functioning properly. These practices focus on recycling water: cleaning wastewater and returning safe water to the water cycle with the goal of protecting human and environmental health in a cost-effective manner.Concepts covered in this course include: the importance of wastewater treatment, an overview of treatment in an onsite system, typical onsite system features, final treatment and dispersal, management, maintenance, safety, and system troubleshooting. While the training’s target audience is property owners who have an onsite system, the concepts are also applicable to the general public, realtors, local health officials, and septic system professionals.This course is FREE to ALL users, but requires creating an account. The Hometown Health Hero award is presented to individuals and/or organizations that have made significant contributions to preserve and/or improve their community’s health.The responsibility of public health is to protect and promote the health of communities through education, policy, and assessment. Making communities safe and healthy is public health's top priority. Everyone can make communities healthier, safer, and better for all.For the past 22 years, the Hometown Health Hero award has shown a spotlight on individuals and/or organizations that have made significant and measurable contributions to preserve and improve the health of their communities.Awardees are selected solely from nominations received. The only way for someone to receive this award is to be nominated.
