Webinar: How to Work with Local Leaders to Declare Racism a Public Health Crisis

Meeting Dates:
Thursday, March 17, 2022
Meeting Time and Location:

1-2pm

Note:

Decades of explicit and implicit racism in social, economic, and political systems have led to inequitable outcomes in communities of color with heavy burdens of toxic stress, disease, and premature death. In response, leaders across the country are adopting formal resolutions to declare racism a public health crisis and are committing to specific policy changes.

Attend this webinar, co-sponsored by the Network and Salud America!, to learn about resources and tools for engaging local advocates and leaders in drafting resolutions. Hear about efforts to get two Florida jurisdictions to declare racism a public health crisis and the multi-disciplinary group of partners and organizations working collectively to raise awareness and provide tools and resources to communities working to advance health and racial equity.

Presenters will also cover:

  • How health and racism are linked
  • The need to dismantle racism
  • Efforts by legal, social justice, and public health advocates to advance health equity and anti-racism action
  • How to use the resources in the Salud America! action pack to connect with local advocates, draft a resolution, start a conversation with local leaders, and build support for a resolution to declare racism a public health crisis.

Presenters:

  • Dawn Hunter, director, Network for Public Health Law—Southeastern Region Office
  • Amanda Merck, research area specialist, Salud America! at UT Health San Antonio
  • Dr. Linsey Grove, president, League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg Area

CLEs will not be offered for this webinar.
